Most people set goals which they think will help them to feel better about themselves, make them happier, fulfilled, excited or relaxed. The problem lies in that nothing outside ourselves can ever provide us with a sustainable means of experiencing the internal mental and emotional states that we seek.

Although the attainment of an external goal may briefly provide the internal state which is really what we’re after, the novelty soon wears off. We therefore keep chasing illusive outcomes and life becomes a rat race that we never win. Goals don’t work when what you’re attempting to accomplish by setting goals is not something that can be accomplished by goals, i.e. to avoid feeling undesired mental and emotional states.

Often the goals we set up for ourselves are distractions from what we fear most in our lives! So we keep moving away from what we don’t want (fear), and continue setting new goals to avoid experiencing the negative emotions which we drag along with us anyway. Probably the greatest undercurrent of all fears is our fear of the unknown, of uncertainty. So we go about setting goals, planning and organizing our lives in a hopeless attempt to avoid the inevitable. The solution: Become comfortable with uncertainty!

If you want to grow, develop and thrive in this day and age, then uncertainty is necessary – it’s a natural order in life. It’s out of uncertainty that new possibilities, opportunities and creativity energy arise. Most people set goals to escape uncertainty, and in so doing deprive themselves of the very experience that they seek to have.

When one learns to embrace uncertainty, life takes on a new meaning and we begin to identify the purpose and value of each experience. Be curious about the gifts awaiting you on the other side of uncertainty. Accept the uncertainty – accept the gift.

If you want to achieve your goals, make sure they’re authentic. An authentic goal is one which only you are responsible for. It doesn’t depend on other people or external circumstances. It’s the desire and intention to experience yourself in a particular way. People and situations may point you in a certain direction, but these are only indicator goals along the way to the achievement of an authentic goal.

Think of an indicator goal as a road sign, rather than the destination you are trying to get to. The indicator goal is only the sign or map. It is NOT the territory. One of my teachers used to remind us to beware of driving into the sign!

Be aware that you’re not setting your goal to avoid the very experience that life might have in store for you – such that you can move in the direction of your desires. For only when you can be with your life exactly as it is do you have the choice to change its direction. And changing direction is a mark of flexibility – one of the key ingredients in achieving your authentic goal. If, for example, happiness is your goal, then start by doing the things and changing your environment to how they will be when you are happy. And if that isn’t making you happier, then change the way you’re doing it until you’re being the person which you wish to become. Remain committed to achieving happiness and flexible as to how you go about it.

Remember the wisdom of the Chinese adage “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Quit focusing on the “thousand miles” part and shift your attention to the step you’re on. It’s only on this step, here and now, where you can experience your authentic goal. In any case an effective strategy to achieve more materialistic desires stems from the energy and focus which you’re cultivating on every step of your journey.

Each successive step along our way through life appears as a result of the thoughts, mental pictures and actions taken in our previous steps. Therefore we are constantly attracting the people and circumstances which are there for us to learn from in order for us to progress. If we refuse the learning and don’t take accountability, then similar situations continue to show up and nudge us along. We’re either successfully achieving the results that we want, or we’re successfully achieving the results that we don’t want!

Eventually we wake up, lock our focus on what we want (as opposed to what we don’t want), become flexible, begin behaving the part of that which we desire and therefore experience it!

It’s no wonder that Mahatma Gandhi said we must be the change that we want to see in the world. It’s the only chance the world has, and the only chance we have of achieving our authentic goals.

In my opinion our greatest opportunity for success in life is where we are each and every moment. It’s the step we’re on!

Weekend Retreat


Once a month Waterdown Health Farm and Spa organizes art, health and spiritual healing retreats for women who dare to reconnect with their bodies and souls. This retreat can also be arranged for any group: private or workplace; at your convenience and a venue of your choice.

Waterdown Health Farm and Spa is an integrative health and healing facility tucked away in a valley on a 22 hectare farm in Mpumalanga.  About 3.5 km from the main road between Nelspruit and White River surrounded by abundant birdlife, rocks and a stream running through it, Waterdown is a hidden sanctuary that provides an opportunity to step back from work and reconnect with the heartbeat of the Earth.  Integrating the healing power of nature, art, ritual, healthy eating, holistic massage, meditation and counseling, Waterdown seeks to find a deeper meaning of health that goes beyond the physical.

“Soul tools for Modern Woman” Retreat is facilitated by Mmatshilo Motsei and Dr Arien van der Merwe assisted by other therapists (art, movement, massage). Using deep relaxation exercises, painting, music, story telling, movement and meditation, the retreat is designed to create a quite, loving and caring space for women to rest, reflect and rejuvenate. By participating in a circle of love and delightful attention, women retrace their steps back to their magnificence.

Ms Motsei is a psychology graduate, Afrikan spiritualist, author and poet who spent the past two decades working as a counselor, trainer and consultant working mainly on personal empowerment for women across Afrika, North America and Europe. As part of her own healing process, Ms Motsei published a book titled Hearing Visions Seeing Voices in 2004.

Dr Arien van der Merwe is a medical doctor, author, health & wellness coach, Fellow of Royal Society of Public Health and Member of the International Stress Management Association. She works as a mind-body facilitator, spiritual teacher, health coach and skills development facilitator in the field of health and wellness. She is well known for her integrative approach in discovering blockages in the human energy system which leads to physical, emotional and spiritual disease.

Positive Health is an Academy of Massage and Aromatherapy.  Although we focus on massage classes for relaxation and release of the 3 T’s – tension, tightness and toxins – and later diplomas in massage, because POSITIVE  TOUCH IS ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTH, we will also be providing classes on other complementary therapies, which will all lead to Positve Health

Our latest offerings are two workshops on Nutrition, presented by well-known Registered Dietician, Annelie Smith, who has had 13 years experience in solving Nutrition ‘problems’ and, from her work over the years, has developed a special interest in our relationships with food, how we sabotage living a full and healthy life by the food choices we make, and how we can change those patterns. Her first workshop is on 23rd May and the second will be on 20th June at the Wellness Centre in Llandudno.

Autumn Harvest

I love Autumn, with the cooler weather, the warm colours and all the harvest time rituals and ceremonies. Along with Autumn comes a symbolic sorting of the wheat from the chaff. There is work to be done, and this work must happen to ensure a fruitful year ahead. This is also the harvest time, a time when we gather toward us that which is needed for the winter ahead; reap the benefits of our labours and choose what is to be preserved. But it is also time to throw out that which has lost it’s usefulness. In this spirit, this month’s edition of Clickholistic includes a challenge: to try something new and also to be brave and let go of something that isn’t working for you anymore! This month’s edition has a few ideas to (hopefully) inspire you to make a change. I’d love to hear your stories.

“Ancient way of healing with the Hands” Thai Yoga Massage :

Thai Yoga Massage is known as ‘Nuard Boran’ in Thailand. It is a Healing Art native to Thailand and comes from Theraveda Buddhism and Buddhist medicine. One does not need to be a Buddhist to practice however it is acknowledged that the technique has its roots in India and made its way to Thailand when the knowledge of Buddhism, Yoga and Aryuveda spread to Asia about 2500 years ago. It could be more accurate to call this medicine by its traditional name of Nuard Boran, or ‘Ancient Way of Healing with The Hands’, because its approach and technique differs considerably to what is commonly understood as massage or massage therapy.

A Thai Massage session incorporates elements of mindfulness, gentle rocking, deep stretching, rhythmic compression, acupressure, massage of the meridian lines, dynamic yoga stretches etc which are all used to create a singular healing experience. Thai Massage is based entirely on principles of energy balancing and works with energy lines to create harmony of the Koshas: body, breath, mind, intellect, ego, memory, emotions, and self. In Theravada Buddhism, the word ‘Metta’ is used to denote ‘loving kindness’ as well as ‘ProMiiWihan Sii’ which can be translated to the ‘Four Divine or States of Mind without limitation’. These ‘Four Divine’ are Love, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity. As long as these qualities are transmitted and exemplified during a Thai Massage session, we can say that it was good and successful. A truly good therapist performs their art in a meditative mood. The therapist starts with a ‘Puja’, a meditative prayer, to fully center themselves on the healing they are about to perform. The therapist must work in a state of full awareness, mindfulness and concentration. After a session clients report feeling energized, relaxed,,relief from Chronic pain and fatigue and a general lasting sense of well-being.

Thai Massage is the fourth branch in Traditional Thai Medicine and recognized by the government of Thailand as an official healing system and is practiced within hospitals. The technique can be used for therapeutic purposes to heal numerous specific ailments as well as achieve deep relaxation.

 Demystifying Neuro Linguistic Programming:

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is well established as a powerful method to develop your potential and enhance performance. It can help you create order from chaos and encourages resourceful ways of thinking while expanding awareness of choices. We’re all born with the same basic neurology. Our ability to do anything in life, whether it’s learning a new skill, cooking a meal or doing business, depends on how we control our nervous system. So, much of NLP is devoted to learning how to think more effectively and communicate more effectively with yourself and others.

Neuro is about your neurological system. NLP is based on the idea that we experience the world through our senses and translate sensory information into thought processes, both conscious and unconscious. Thought processes activate the neurological system, which affects physiology, emotions and behaviour. Linguistic refers to the way human beings use language to make sense of the world, capture and conceptualise experience, and communicate that experience to others. In NLP, linguistics is the study of how the words you speak influence your experience. Programming draws heavily from learning theory and addresses how we code or mentally represent experience. Your personal programming consists of your internal processes and strategies (thinking patterns) that you use to make decisions, solve problems, learn, evaluate and get results. NLP shows people how to recode their experiences and organise their internal programming so they can get the outcomes they want.

NLP explains how we define and experience reality based on our neurological filters. These filters are programmed in our mind as a result of our cultural and educational upbringing as well as our significant life experiences. Our personal filters (like beliefs and values) determine our how our mind perceives all our experiences. These perceptions influence our mental and emotional state – leading to related behaviours. So it’s our perceptions that determine the quality of each moment of our life. NLP enables us to be in control of our minds by means of changing our perceptions. When we change our internal maps of reality, we change our external experience of reality too.

NLP can be described in various ways. The formal definition is that it is ‘the study of the structure of our subjective experience.’

Here are a few more ways of answering the question: ‘What is NLP?’

• It’s the route to get the results you want in all areas of your life

• Influencing others with integrity

NLP began in the early 1970’s when Richard Bandler, PhD and Dr John Grinder, PhD, studied people, they considered to be excellent communicators and agents of change. From those days, the field of NLP has exploded to encompass many disciplines in many countries around the world. Some have made NLP more practical and humanistic – helping transform and enrich the lives of many people. The literature on NLP is prolific. Today you’ll find NLP applications amongst coaches and therapists, doctors and nurses, taxi drivers, sales people, accountants, managers, teachers and animal trainers, workers, parents and teenagers alike. NLP informs us that the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is not in how many resources they have, but in the way they think, in the way they talk and in the way they act. The way you think is what you create in your inner world. The way you talk and act is what you express in your outer world. If you want to be fully successful, you must align your thoughts, speech and actions and apply the following 5 basic principles:

1. KNOW YOUR OUTCOME What is your desired end result? Focus on what you want.

2. TAKE ACTION What is the next smallest achievable step that leads in the direction of your outcome?

3. HAVE SENSORY AWARENESS Use all your senses to notice the signs which confirm that you’re on the right path, or warn you that you’ve detoured.

4. HAVE BEHAVIOURAL FLEXIBILITY Keep trying new approaches until you get your desired result.

5. OPERATE FROM A PHYSIOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY OF EXCELLENCE Be the person you wish to become through achieving your outcome.

Some of the areas where NLP is used are:

Business: Coaching, Training, Negotiation, Sales, and Leadership Development. NLP provides the “how to do it” for all the “what to dos” of the other leadership models.

Education: Classroom management; incorporating the concept of different learning styles: Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic, including values and other deep structural “filters” that influence each individual’s interest and capacity to learn; accelerated learning technologies; photo reading; spelling and other strategies to enhance learning.

Therapy: Highly effective Brief Therapy models to treat: phobia, trauma, post-traumatic stress, habit & addiction cessation, allergic response, relationship problems, grief, depression, healing of negative emotions, ADD, ADHD and more.

Sports Performance: NLP is renowned for its capacity to enhance performance in Golf, Tennis and Diving. NLP is also used extensively in enhancing sports performance for athletes from the amateur to the world class level. Both individuals and teams can benefit greatly by including NLP principles in their training.

The secret to health and happiness lies deep within every human. Yoga is the science of discovering one’s own self – the very source of pure consciousness, peace and bliss. Everyone knows that we don’t feel good and we get stressed when there is disharmony in our lives, when our bodies are tired and our busy minds constantly chatter and judge.
