BUTEYKO METHOD WILL BE IN SA SOON!
Well, after many delays I am finally going to Australia in April to do the practical aspect of the Buteyko Breathing course. I have been so priveleged to study with Jennifer and Russell Stark, two of the very few Western practitioners to study with Alexandrei Stalmatsky and Dr. Buteyko himself. Dr. Buteyko personally approved the course that Russell and Jennifer teach, which is the purest method of Buteyko Breathing available.
The Starks pioneered Buteyko in Australia, New Zealand and then taught pactitioners from around the world, including Canada, UK, America and the Netherlands. Now, the Buteyko Method - as taught by the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health (BIBH) - will be available in South Africa from the end of May 2010. For more info see:
Thoughts on Buteyko Breathing Method
Hello again everyone
I wanted to share this newsletter from Jennifer Starke of the Buteyko Institute for Breathing and Health in Australia and New Zealand. Jennifer may be persuaded to come out to Cape Town next year and teach the practical component of the Buteyko Breathing method for asthma. The Buteyko course for health practitioners costs AU$4000.00, but this does not include travel and accomodation for the trainer, the costs of which can be shared by participants. The theory part can be completed via correspondence, and the practical must be observed and completed with her over ten days, observing how she works with patients. We would like to set up a free “clinic” for a minimum of 20 asthma sufferers, to teach them to control their asthma with minimal use of drugs. The Buteyko Method has been clinically trialed in several double-blind placebo trials, in the UK, Australia and NZ. The results were astounding. Over 90% reduced their intake of broncho-dilators and over 40% reduced their intake of steroid preventors. Buteyko is not an “alternative” treatment which insists that asthma sufferers go without medication. It is an empowering tool to help asthma sufferers to better control symptoms, thereby reducing their reliance on medication. Jennifer needs ten people to commit to doing the course, before she can come to SA. Let me know if you are interested: clickholistic @ gmail.com

The claim that 80% of asthma-related deaths are due to the regular use of bronchodilators is a serious charge made by Cornell, Stanford researchers lead by Shelley and Edwin Salpeter. The research team states that the prime culprits are long-acting bronchodilators, such as Serevent and Oxis (Oxese). And even when combined with the steroids Flixotide (Flovent) or Pulmicort to form Seretide (Advair) or Symbicort, these drugs are still thought to be potentially dangerous.
So much so that in North America the Food Drug Adminstration (FDA) has listed them with a “black box warning”, which is the strongest warning that can be applied without banning the drug altogether. Because of this strong warning, in the USA it is rare to find people using more than one puff of these medications more than once a day. In Australia and New Zealand however, this is certainly not the case as people are regularly prescribed two puffs twice a day as if our asthmatic people are somehow different to their US counterparts.
It is not that long ago that people were dying in large numbers from asthma that was attributed to the over-use of bronchodilators in New Zealand. Let’s hope that this does not happen again. If you are prescribed a long-acting bronchodilator, with or without an inhaled steroid, perhaps you could ask your doctor how this is going to improve your health in the future.
We are frequently told by users of these medications that while they no longer have as many asthma symptoms, they are less able to physically perform as well as they used to. This means that walks they used to find easy are now more difficult, or they seem to have more fatigue today than they had two years ago. In many instances these people are now experiencing something that seldom was seen in conjunction with asthma: they are experiencing sleep apnoea.
The Asthma – Sleep Apnoea Link
“My daughter now enjoys a solid sleep, no more middle-of-the-night coughing and waking. She is also enjoying sports and participates more.” Carol
Asthma has long been linked to poor sleep, and may have a problem with snoring, but before long-acting bronchodilators came on the scene, the person would wake during the night needing to take a short-acting bronchodilator, such as Ventolin. So the snoring that dries and cools airways as well as causing a loss of carbon dioxide, would waken asthmatics as their breathing became laboured. With the use of long-acting bronchodilators, this airway irritation is more likely to be masked, and as the airways become increasingly cooled, and dried, they typically respond by increasing mucus production and swelling.
As the airway narrows more than usual, and because the throat muscles are extremely relaxed during sleep, it becomes increasingly likely that the airway will collapse due to the excessive upper-chest breathing that is linked to snoring. When the airway is sucked closed in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, no air can enter or leave the lungs, making an ‘apnoea’ or abnormally long pause in breathing.
In addition to this, more carbon dioxide than usual is being exhaled as the person breathes faster or more forcefully than normally occurs during sleep, and when there is a minute but sudden drop in carbon dioxide, the breathing slows or even stops for a short period of time until the concentration gets back to its usual level. Both the collapsed airway and the passive pause in breathing raise carbon dioxide and lower oxygen, but because the person is asleep it takes a little while for the brain to realise that this is happening. After a time the person momentarily wakens long enough to re-start the breathing, but usually not long enough to register the wakening. This happens so many times a night that on waking, the person often feels more tired than before they went to bed. Day-time fatigue, headaches, brain fog and lacking of stamina are common symptoms of sleep apnoea.
“Before my Buteyko course, my husband woke me to stop snoring until he got to sleep. Now he wakes me to see if I am still alive and breathing. I can’t win!” Althea
Introduce Yourself to Buteyko
Instead this book that is easy to read without any prior knowledge of anatomy or biochemistry, sets out clearly how breathing can adversely affect your health, it explains the whys and wherefores of the Buteyko method, and it also gives you plenty of tips to make improvements. The book can be purchased through our website http://www.buteyko.co.nz/products/default.cfm for $25.
The Buteyko View-point on Food
Probably every Buteyko practitioner will bring a little of him or herself to this part of a Buteyko course because everyone has an opinion about diet and this opinion does not necessarily reflect what Professor Buteyko found in his research. When we had the privilege of spending time with Professor Buteyko, we found that he ate and drank in moderation almost anything that was placed on the table. The only thing that he seemed violently opposed to was chocolate. We received the understanding that this was to be considered the worst food in the world, and if your children have not eaten chocolate, then teach them that it is a punishment to do so in the hope that they will not develop a liking for it.
Moderation appears to be the key to any sensible diet because we all need sustenance but an over-supply is unnecessary. The Buteyko rule is easy to remember: eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you have had enough. This sounds simple enough, but social occasions often cause us to eat out of politeness; and boredom, stress, or fatigue often stimulate the appetite as a distraction.
Professor Buteyko found that eating cooked food increased the breathing more than eating raw food, and eating easily-digested proteins increased the breathing most of all. Perhaps then the best advice is that while trying to maintain a well-balanced diet, aim to eat these types of foods sparingly:
· When you are unwell
· Before bedtime
· When you feel a little wheezy or tight-chested
· Before an important meeting, such as a job interview or a presentation.
When hyperventilation is entrenched, the kidneys regularly dump bicarbonate ions, and when they do this they also excrete positive ions or cations, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphates. Without an adequate supply of these minerals, the body has a tough time maintaining good health, and so using unprocessed, fully mineralised sea salt in cooking is an easy way of replenishing them.
‘I not only learnt about my breathing, I learnt about my diet, my body and myself. The course is excellent. The things Russell told me in 5 days my doctor had failed to mention in years.” Hayley
Buteyko Practitioner Training in Australia, North America and the UK
Teaching the Buteyko method is challenging and interesting as well as enormously rewarding, and with approximately 15% of the entire world’s population having asthma and the same with a snoring problem, there are plenty of people who would benefit from learniing to have better breathing. If you want to find out about the training then email Jennifer on training@buteyko.co.nz for more information about courses in Australia, North America and also in the UK.
Refresher Courses
“Since the first Buteyko course and refresher course, my asthma is under control without drugs. I breathe through my nose 80% of my waking hours. Buteyko is a new life for people who suffer from asthma”. Robert
Don’t be shy about emailing or phoning to say that you need a bit of help with your breathing. We offer free refresher courses to anyone who has attended our courses. If we don’t have a course running in the near future, then we will try to help you by email or by phone.
“Well worth doing. I had forgotten some of the exercises after a few months – was glad I could do a refresher.” Leila
Buteyko Tip of the Season
With people staying indoors for longer periods each day in the northern hemisphere due to cold weather, increased outbreaks of viruses are likely. Your nose is a wonderful germ-filter, so use it to breathe through as much as you can. Make it a personal challenge to breathe only through your nose for a whole day, and when you have mastered that, aim for a whole week. Those living in the southern hemisphere should remember that heat is a powerful breathing stimulant, so keep as cool as you can.

Egypt Tour is a Resounding Success
Personally, I have never seen how quickly we can shift our perceptions on a spiritual and physical level, as we can in Egypt. The Land knows us intimately well, when our bodies start remembering – the magic starts happening. Everyone on the trip had that “special place” that triggered the memories from past experiences. The trip integrated a lot of those lost pieces of our souls. For many this was a difficult experience, for those who allowed spirit to flow, it went quite smoothly. A full story of shared experiences and photos will be posted on our website later this month. See www.solaraura.co.za
Egypt offers some of the best aromatherapy oils in the world. We brought some special oils back and will be selling selected stock at the Obs holistic market this coming Sunday, 6 December in Observatory. Don’t forget the Obs Christmas market on Sunday, 20 December.
Join us for our Solar Aura head, back and shoulder massage course on Saturday, 12 December. The workshop is easy to follow and interactive, you practice while you learn the techniques. This massage is still used in India to this day to bring wellbeing, harmony and balance into your life. After completing the introduction course you will be able to give friends or family a loving massage.
Join us for our last Third Eye / Aura workshop for the year on Sunday, 13 December. We bring you the workshop fresh from the temple of Horus in Egypt. The initiation of the third eye opens and connects the heart chakra to the third eye chakra so that you can start living and see-ing your reality totally out of the heart. By opening your third eye you will experience energy like you have never experienced it before.
Tamar and I manifested this amazing tour to Egypt by working with our manifestation crystal grids. I teach this workshop only once or twice a year. The final one for this year is on Wednesday, 16 December – yes the public holiday. This workshop jump-starts your manifestation skills and teaches you how to focus your energy on what you desire. For those who have done it before it is a good idea to create a grid for every year, the workshop itself has also grown into a more right and left brain awareness process. So come and play again, bring a friend and you attend for free.
much love
Berto and Tamar
Are you practising illegally?
I often find myself as a Holistic Health Practitioner, having to tell clients that I am not a “Therapist”, and that I don’t offer “treatments”. It shouldn’t really matter, right? A rose by any other name still smells as sweet…however, it does matter – and the reason is that I can be accused of practising MEDICINE without a license.
What? But medicine doesn’t even enter into what I do!
Exactly.
In terms of the Medical Scope of Practice Act, the word “therapy” may be seen to imply that that a diagnosis has been made and that a treatment is being given for that specifically diagnosed ailment. That is why a “therapeutic massage therapist”, for example, is required to be registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of SA. In fact, anyone offering anything of a “therapeutic” nature is required to be registered.
Another interesting section to the Act, is the implication that recommending ANYTHING can be seen as “prescribing” – another thing that only registered Medical professionals may do. Even if what you are “prescribing” is not medicine – in terms of the Act, it is still illegal.
Do yourself a favour and get to grips with the terminology – it may save your practice in the future as regulations toughen up regarding these issues. i’d really like to hear your thoughts on this – please comment below, or send me an e-mail.

MARKETING YOUR HOLISTIC HEALTH BUSINESS ON THE WEB
All of us know that the internet is a great tool for keeping in touch via e-mail, facebook and so on, but do many of us use it effectively to market our businesses? Is it necessary to have a website, and if we have one, how can we be certain that we will get any traffic to it? Is it necessary to go to the expense of having a site at all? The short answer to that question is “no”…well sort of…
If you are part of an association, often there will be a great website to go along with that. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Be sure to be correctly loaded onto their practitioner directory!
If your practice is your own and you are not part of an association or statutory body, then a website is important. But it doesn’t have to be an expensive flashy one with all the bells and whistles. It really needs to act like a “virtual” business card. Your contact details, a detailed description of what you do, (client testimonials are always a winner) along with some attractive photographs of you at work are sufficient. Try to resist using too many unrelated pictures – they only make your site take longer to download, which can be very frustrating to those with slow connections. There’s really no point putting pictures of raindrops on bamboo leaves up on your site – unless it is pertinent to what you do. Don’t feel you have to have a 5-page site either, most people will only look at a homepage in any case. Often, people think that a website is unneccesary – but having no presence on the internet is also not a viable option for those with their own businesses – how can people find you if you aren’t in the directory? It’s the same for the internet. Many potential clients will use the internet as their first port of call – especially if they are in an office all day and have unlimited access. If you’re not there you will be overlooked! Don’t underestimate the value of the anonymous browser – there are many people who will not feel comfortable making that call unless they have a sense of who it is they are talking to and what you will be offering them. The internet can give those folks a bit of a safe place to “check you out” from a distance before they go ahead with making an appointment.
For those without huge budgets, shop around! There are many smaller website developers who offer excellent packages – sometimes including hosting at a reasonable monthly fee. They will help you with artwork and design your internet identity, so be sure to be very clear to them about what you expect from your website.
For health practitioners on a budget, a blog may be the answer. As long as you don’t mind your address including the name of the host, blogs are free and easy to maintain. Anyone can have one – all you need is computer access and an e-mail account. Even a gmail or hotmail address is sufficient. Blogs are great – you can add links, update them easily, and put new and interesting information on them with no hassle. Blogs are user-friendly – you just have to pick a theme from a bunch of templates and then type! You don’t need much in the way of computer skills, either – if you can send an e-mail and figure out Windows, then you can have a blog. Some people will tell you that blogs can earn you money too, by allowing Google to paste ads all over your pages. Don’t be too suckered into the whole “making money with blogs” routine – there are many people making money off people hoping to make money with their blog! Most average bloggers earn in the region of US$3 – $30 per month – and that is with a whole heap of hard networking!
Many of us get approached by companies wanting us to join an internet directory. Many of us will be told that we will be guaranteed plenty of exposure – but often this is not the case. There are literally thousands of internet directories out there – but not many of them can offer the individual business any guarantees of traffic. It is probably a better option to get a facebook page and send a link to it via all your personal networks, than pay to join an internet directory that will only serve to dilute your business by putting you in alongside all your competitors. That is – unless you are absolutely certain that the directory advertises itself sufficiently to be a first option for those looking for the services you may have to offer.
Becoming part of a professional business network that offers the opportunity of being loaded onto their webpage is also an option – at least then you can be guaranteed that fellow networkers will make use of the site and possibly use and promote your services.
The internet has often been compared with the “collective unconcious”. To me it is a vast network of possibilities, information and new friends. To not make use of opportunities it presents, is to not take advantage of the abundance offered by the Universe. I love the internet! I hope this inspires you to use it more effectively too.
Wishing you abundance, health and wellness,
Melody
Gudni Comes Out of Hiding
Some of the busiest posts on my site are those tagged: “Rocky Mountain Mystery School”. So here’s a follow up for all you curious folks…
Gudni Gudnason, Grand Master / Head Master / whatever he is calling himself these days, has recently re-married, after his very public divorce from Laurie, who was the registered owner of the Rocky Mountain Mystery School. Rumour has it that she sold it to him after their split. Wonder what Laurie thinks of the new bride? I do get the impression that the ex-Mrs. Gudnason is a genuine person with alot of love in her heart, so I’m sure she is really happy for him.
Gudni’s new bride is a lovely Japanese lady and his blog (one of many) has all the wedding pics. Having said that, he admits to enjoying a wedding every year – well why not?
Gudni certainly has come out of hiding, so to speak, and he also runs the Annual Alchemy Conference – where he is listed as holding a PHD – although we can’t be sure in what exactly, only that he is Dr. Gudnason. Anyone know anything about that?
Gudni now even has a facebook page – but it takes too long to load as he has many, many friends. Even spotted Brad Pitt there! I hope Gudni doesn’t mind, but I thought this was a fabulous pic of the icelandic turned japanese school -master to share with you all….So as you can see - Gudni (and Elvis) are alive and well and living the good life!!!

We are One

Dance - an llustration from the Lovely Book
I pondered the above statement for a while and came to the conclusion that it was fitting that on Clickholistic’s first birthday that that message: “we are one” was the header. Because that is really what Clickholistic is all about – promoting awareness of various holistic therapies, techniques, practitioners and like minded people – proving that we are all One, striving towards a common goal – Oneness. Holistic Health is the practice of reaching wholeness. I would like to thank all of the practitioners who are subscribers to Clickholistic, all the visitors (thousands!) who reach these pages in their search for information, and those who have contributed to creating a better understanding of what we do. My gratitude to you all.
This month we have submissions from some very busy women! Lehla Eldridge, who is a writer of an inspirational book “The lovely book”; wife to coach Anthony Eldridge Rodgers and mother of three tells us about herself. We also learn more about Jin Shin Jyutsu and the “Self Help Workshops” in this amazing technique offered by Lynda Silk. Dr. Arien Van Der Merwe, medical doctor and wellness practitioner, tells us a bit more about her history, and Ginny Johnstone, Bio-Pulsar practitioner, coach, holistic therapist, wife and Mom of twins is offering a free Biopulsar scan.
A Short Biography – Lehla Eldridge
Lehla Eldridge studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 1989-1992 along with a host of now famous people. On graduating she was awarded a scholarship by Twentieth Century Fox to study theatre in South Africa. She worked with various theatre companies for a year and then went back to London to work as an actress. She then formed her own theatre company which was chosen to inaugurate The International Theatre Festival in Delhi, with her co written show ‘On The Boil’.
Her love for South Africa did not leave her as she went back with an idea to write and illustrate a cookbook. She approached a publisher and went on to write The South African Illustrated Cookbook. She travelled around South Africa in a hire car with a paint box, pen and notebook and wangled her way in to people’s kitchens. She was generously given recipes from all the different cultures, from Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans and Indian to Cape Malay.
The Cookbook is now on its sixth print run and has also been translated in to Dutch.
She went on to live on a fruit farm with her husband, ran and owned a restaurant and had three children all in three years. This led her to taking time out for her sanity to produce a book called The Lovely Book for Wonderful Women. It is a book celebrating wonderful women and is written with humour and insight in to what makes women laugh and feel good.
She is a self taught artist, having grown up with an artist father who ran workshops in Italy. Her childhood was littered with bohemians doing inventive quirky things, like making papier mache mountains, installing them on their heads and accidentally setting them alight…and it was these people that hugely influenced her life.
The South African Illustrated Cookbook is published by Struik New Holland and The Lovely Book for Wonderful Women is published by The Succulent Press.

As the last of the golden orange leaves falls to brown, autumn falls into winter. The sky darkens, the days become shorter. Our focus shifts from that which is outside to the indoors; we turn inwards. The natural inclination is to reduce our activity to essential functioning; simply being cosy at home becomes extra attractive. In winter our energy goes deep, to the deepest level of our bodies, to the marrow of our bones. In this quietening we often become introspective, questioning “where is my life flowing?”.
The wisdom of winter is the capacity and confidence to be still and recognise and review our unique heritage and capacity, and with that, to restore our clarity in what is ours to create in this lifetime. As we know the depth of who we are, our fears are allayed. Having confidence in what we are made of, and confidence in the capacity of the bigger whole to support that, we flow effortlessly with life. We accept that we have a unique form to express, and we meet the challenge of making our unique contribution to the world.
Jin Shin Jyutsu (pronounced jin-shin-JIT-soo), an ancient art of harmonising body mind and heart, reminds us that we are not separate from nature. We are nature. Nature is not just something that we experience on weekends away in the countryside; nature is within the rhythms of our own body. We are strongest when we live in harmony with the seasons of nature.
“At the heart of us exists a silent pulse of perfect rhythm. Whatever our imperfections there exists a silent pulse of perfect rhythm,” said Mary Burmeister, the Japanese-American woman who brought the gift of Jin Shin Jyutsu from Japan to the West. Jin Shin Jyutsu simply helps us to live this perfect expression of harmony that is innate to each of us, to be the divine blueprint, to live in harmony with the greater whole.
As well as a profound and beautiful philosophy, Jin Shin Jyutsu is the art of knowing and utilising simple practical helpers to bring our body, mind and heart into harmony with the bigger whole. It is for this reason that Mary referred to Jin Shin Jyutsu as Physiophilosophy, Physiopsychology and Physiophysiology. In order to know the universe, we focus on knowing who I am. The body is a microcosm of the macrocosm.
An easy Jin Shin Jyutsu helper to energize and balance the rhythm of the winter months is simply to hold the entire index finger with the opposite hand. Hold it for a few minutes or until you feel a rhythmic pulse. So doing, instead of freezing through the winter, we flow in its wisdom.
According to ancient written records, stored in the archives of the Imperial Palace in Japan, the principles of Jin Shin Jyutsu were widely known in ancient times across many cultures. For many generations these were passed on through verbal teachings and shared experience. Knowledge of this ancient art of harmonising life energy faded gradually until the concept was virtually lost.
It was rediscovered in the early 1900s by Master Jiro Murai, who, after recovery from a ‘terminal’ illness, in gratitude devoted himself to the revival of the Art for future generations. Master Murai was a man of keen intelligence with great dedication and capacity for questioning. After years of broad, systematic and meticulous research, he organised the body of ancient knowledge for transmission.
Jin Shin Jyutsu differs from other healing modalities in that the focus is never on healing, the focus is always simply and profoundly on harmony. Healing is a side-effect of living in harmony with who and what we are. Jin Shin Jyutsu is empowering in its foundation on the innate ability of each to harmonise him/herself. Through utilising specific hands-on sequences we are able to restore emotional equilibrium, relieve pain, and release the causes of acute and chronic conditions. It can be utilised as an adjunct to other therapies or medications and can be used by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
Our wellbeing depends upon the free and even distribution of life energy throughout our body, mind, and spirit. ‘When the stress and strain of daily living disrupt the movement of life energy, our mind, body, and spirit are all affected. Not only do we succumb to worry, fear, anger, sadness, and pretensions, but we increase our tendency to become ill or “out of balance.”’1
Jin Shin Jyutsu harmonises all bodily systems – endocrine, immune, nervous, skeletal, digestive and so forth by simply addressing the availability of the underlying source, the flow of energy that supplies life force to all systems.
Anybody who is interested in establishing and maintaining harmony and health in their lives can benefit from Jin Shin Jyutsu. A session with a qualified Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner commonly lasts 1 hour. It may be shorter. During a Jin Shin Jyutsu session the client remains fully clothed and reclines on a therapy table. The session might begin with the practitioner simply observing the body – where the tension sits in the body, whether one shoulder is higher than another, the way the hands rest, or the toes bend. The practitioner also listens to the client’s pulses, before beginning sequences of holds to energise specific “safety energy locks”. Only gentle firm pressure is utilised during holds, no massage or deep pressure is applied.

Jin Shin Jyutsu can also be deeply empowering when practised as a self-help tool.
Lynda Silk offers private consultations as well as workshops on Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help Current weekend workshops include Cape Town 11-12 July, Johannesburg end July and Durban beginning August.

She is passionate about helping others find the real cause of disease and therefore the way to healing, which lies deep within us. I’m working very much on the epigenetic structure of the cell membrane, where the messages actually go through to the DNA molecule within the cell nucleus. Whatever binds to the receptors on the cell membrane, ultimately affects the function of every cell. These binding molecules (the vibrations of thoughts, emotions, nutrients, oxygen, water, sound), are under our control and the better we know how to do it consciously, the more control we have over the unconscious saboteurs within our own unconscious minds. This is my life purpose: to help others while I’m forever learning myself to do so! (‘We teach best what we most have to learn!). Her dream is to, eventually, open a healing sanctuary for those with chronic disease, to come for rest, relaxation, deep healing and recovery.
